Category 1 - Elk Hunts

 

(Can only be drawn once in a lifetime if drawn in 2002 or later.) Minimum age requirements for Controlled Hunts is 14, unless otherwise specified. One applicant only; NO GROUP APPLICATIONS. Applicants may apply using an apprentice-designated license, but must be hunter education certified prior to participating in the elk hunt. Up to three (3) hunt choices may be selected.

A)

 

Selected Wichita Mountains NWR elk applicants must attend a pre-hunt briefing at 10:00 a.m. on the day preceding their hunt at the Visitor Center.  Minimum age requirement is 18 years of age. SPECIAL NOTE: Applicants should be prepared for extremely rough terrain and expect rigorous exercise during hunts.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to bring a helper to assist with removal of carcass from hunt area to hunter check station.  Accommodations will be made for non-ambulatory hunters.  Firearm requirements are centerfire only rifles of .270 caliber or larger.  All handguns are prohibited. There is a five (5) shells per day limit.
