Landowner Assistance Programs

There are many successful wildlife management stories in Oklahoma. Deer and turkey aren’t the only two, but they’re probably the most dramatic. There was a time when, in some parts of the state, seeing a deer or turkey was a celebrated event. Now huntable populations of both species exist in all 77 counties.

Just as creating these success stories wasn’t easy, neither is making sure they remain ongoing and progressive. With many species now firmly established and the sciences of fish and wildlife management maturing into adulthood, the next logical chapters in these tales are now becoming more and more apparent. Fish and wildlife professionals must begin to entice private landowners to increase their role in habitat management. After all, since 95 percent of Oklahoma is privately-owned, the long-term future of deer, turkeys and other wildlife species rests in the hands of those who own the property where they now occur.

The Wildlife Department recognizes the importance of landowner involvement in successful habitat and wildlife management -- and it has a number of private lands assistance programs to prove it. Wildlife Division, Fisheries Division and the Wildlife Diversity Program all offer various kinds of assistance. Each of these programs is outlined below.
