2008 Elk Season Dates and Regulations

 

License Requirements

Elk licenses are now available for purchase at any license dealer or online at wildlifedepartment.com.

All elk hunters must obtain an elk license prior to hunting elk. The elk license and written permission from the landowner, or where appropriate the lessee (tenant), must be carried on the person while hunting elk. Elk hunters may only hunt on those lands for which they have written permission.

Resident lifetime hunting and lifetime combination license holders no longer need to obtain a free permit to hunt elk. Written landowner permission, or where appropriate the lessee (tenant), is required in addition to the lifetime license.

Residents: A hunting license and a Legacy permit or proof of exemption. In addition, all elk hunters must possess an elk license for each elk hunted or proof of exemption.

Nonresidents: Nonresident elk hunters are exempt from a hunting license while hunting elk, but they must possess a nonresident elk license for each elk hunted and a Legacy permit or proof of exemption. Holders of nonresident lifetime hunting and lifetime combination licenses are not exempt from purchasing elk licenses.

Hunting Areas

Private lands in Caddo, Comanche and Kiowa counties.

Legal Elk Definitions

A legal bull is defined as having at least six (6) points on at least one (1) side.

Antlerless elk are defined as elk with no visible antlers.

Dates & Limits

Season Limit: Two (2) elk per hunter, regardless of sex and method of taking. Granite Hills area/ West Zone limit is one (1) elk of either sex. Slick Hills area/ East Zone limit is two (2) elk, one of which must be antlerless.

Granite Hills Area / West Zone - private lands west of Hwy 115.

Archery (Legal bull or antlerless elk): Oct. 4 - 8 and Dec. 13 - 17, 2008.

Gun (Legal bull only): Oct. 9 - 11 and Dec. 18 - 20, 2008.

Gun (Legal bull or antlerless elk): Oct. 12 and Dec. 21, 2008.

Slick hills area / East Zone - private lands east of Hwy 115.

Archery (Legal bull or antlerless elk): Oct. 4 - 8 and Dec. 13 - 17, 2008.

Gun (Legal bull or antlerless elk): Oct. 9 - 12 and Dec. 18 - 21, 2008.

Gun (antlerless elk only): Nov. 22 - Dec. 7, 2008 and Jan. 1 - 31, 2009.

Shooting Hours

One-half hour before official sunrise to one-half hour after official sunset.

Legal Means of Taking

Archery: Equipment described as legal for deer archery season.

Gun: Equipment described as legal for deer gun season.

Tagging

Hunters shall immediately upon harvesting an elk securely attach their name and license number to the carcass.

Checking

All elk must be checked at a hunter check station (deer check station) in one of the three elk hunting counties, or with authorized Department personnel assigned to one of the three counties.

The carcass tag must remain with the carcass through processing and/or storage at commercial processing or storage facilities.

Carcasses may be checked in quartered with the sex organs naturally attached and head accompanying the carcass.

Hunter Orange

Hunters participating in the elk gun season using firearms described as legal must conspicuously wear both a head covering and an outer garment above the waistline both consisting of hunter orange color totaling at least 400 square inches. Camouflage hunter orange is legal.

Hunters participating in the elk gun season using archery equipment must conspicuously wear either a head covering or an outer garment above the waistline consisting of hunter orange. Camouflage hunter orange is legal.
