Whether you’re making tallow for the first time or refining your yearly tradition, remember that this process is about more than just making something useful; it’s about honoring your harvest and embracing the outdoors. Every jar of tallow is a small act of respect for the animal and a testament to your resourcefulness. Here’s to slow, intentional living, and to never letting good things go to waste.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup rendered deer tallow (cleaned and strained)
  • 2 tbsp jojoba oil
  • 10–15 drops lavender essential oil (you can play with other scents that you enjoy)
  • (Optional) 1 tsp beeswax for a firmer balm
  • (Optional) 5 drops of vitamin E oil as a natural preservative

Directions

  1. Melt the tallow
  2. Place deer tallow in a heatproof bowl or double boiler over low heat until completely melted.
  3. Add jojoba oil
  4. Stir in jojoba oil (and beeswax if using) until everything is melted and smooth.
  5. Cool slightly
  6. Remove from heat and let cool for 3–5 minutes — the mixture should still be liquid but not too hot to touch.
  7. Add lavender and vitamin E oils
  8. Stir gently to combine, ensuring even distribution of essential oils.
  9. Pour & set
  10. Pour into tins or small jars. Let cool completely (1–2 hours) before capping.
