Whether you’re making tallow for the first time or refining your yearly tradition, remember that this process is about more than just making something useful; it’s about honoring your harvest and embracing the outdoors. Every jar of tallow is a small act of respect for the animal and a testament to your resourcefulness. Here’s to slow, intentional living, and to never letting good things go to waste.
Ingredients
- ½ cup rendered deer tallow (cleaned and strained)
- 2 tbsp jojoba oil
- 10–15 drops lavender essential oil (you can play with other scents that you enjoy)
- (Optional) 1 tsp beeswax for a firmer balm
- (Optional) 5 drops of vitamin E oil as a natural preservative
Directions
- Melt the tallow
- Place deer tallow in a heatproof bowl or double boiler over low heat until completely melted.
- Add jojoba oil
- Stir in jojoba oil (and beeswax if using) until everything is melted and smooth.
- Cool slightly
- Remove from heat and let cool for 3–5 minutes — the mixture should still be liquid but not too hot to touch.
- Add lavender and vitamin E oils
- Stir gently to combine, ensuring even distribution of essential oils.
- Pour & set
- Pour into tins or small jars. Let cool completely (1–2 hours) before capping.
