Recognizing Trophy Game and Hunters

The Cy Curtis Award celebrates Oklahoma's trophy animals and the hunters who harvest them. Established in 1972, the award honors Cy Curtis, a former Wildlife Department biologist widely credited with successfully restoring white-tailed deer populations in Oklahoma. Today, the program extends its recognition to all of Oklahoma’s trophy big game species, including white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, pronghorn, and black bears.

Oklahoma has produced numerous remarkable entries into the Cy Curtis Program in recent years. These trophy harvests are meticulously documented in the Cy Curtis Awards Online Database, which enables users to explore thousands of record-breaking animals harvested within the state.

How Scoring Works

Measurements must be taken by a qualified employee of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation or by a measurer certified by Boone & Crockett or Pope & Young. Animals that meet minimum requirements receive entry into the state’s Cy Curtis Record Database along with the hunter, who also receives a certificate of recognition.

Score sheets for each species are available below for information and rough scoring purposes. To be eligible for entry, the trophy must be officially scored as outlined above.

Program Scoring Criteria

Species eligible for scoring and entry include legally harvested white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, antelope, and black bear.
Official scoring must take place anytime following a 60-day mandatory drying period.
Harvest, check-in, and license information are required at the time of scoring/submission.
Hunters must sign and submit the Cy Curtis Fair Chase Statement with their entry. Digital signatures are accepted.

Got to my spot in the weeds and made a tumbleweed blind, saw a few deer but no elk. Waited for a while and decided to get up and leave to go to work. As soon as o stood up I took a look around and coming right at me was this big boy. I sat down easily without him seeing any movement, got my Mathew’s ready , he keep coming until he got 41 yards away and started veering off, I sat up and drew my bow, he stopped and looked right at me and I let it fly. The land was still in that mid-day lull, when nothing feels rushed and patience is the only way forward. Dust hung in the air, and the silence pressed in, broken only by the wind brushing past the blind. Then the bugles started. One long, raw call cut across the property, followed by another and another, their echoes carrying weight and authority. It didn’t sound like Oklahoma anymore—it sounded wild. With every bugle, my pulse picked up until I could hear my own heart beating, loud and steady in my ears. In that moment, everything narrowed down to instinct, breath, and waiting. When the bull finally stepped out, he looked every bit the animal those calls promised—thick, alert, and moving with purpose. I eased the rifle up, feeling the solid weight of it against my shoulder, forcing myself to slow down. The world shrank to the crosshairs, the sound of bugling, and my heartbeat. When the shot broke, it echoed hard, and then everything went quiet again. Walking up to the elk afterward, there was no rush—just respect. Gratitude for the animal, the land, and the chance to be part of something that still feels raw and earned. I took him at 15 yards with archery and he weighed in at 568 lbs and 494.4 lbs field dressed. He had a 38 inch neck and was 86 inches in length. He was aged at 8 1/2 yrs old and he was the first bear I have ever hunted and proud to say I did it on my own thru trial and error. I hunted this bear for 3 years and he and I have ALOT of history together during that time. He walked right up to the tree I was setting in and was within inches of the tree before he walked to the barrels. Truly an adrenaline rush I will never experience again in my life. Close	Pittsburg	A
