The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is partnering with Quail Forever to host an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday Oct. 12, at Kaw Wildlife Management Area with an optional mentored small game hunt in the afternoon. Space is limited to 50 attendees.  

Participants will have the option to shoot clay targets at the WMA's newly built shooting range, learn about how to hunt Oklahoma's public land, explore Kaw WMA and attend a small game workshop.

Bring your family and stay for a weekend hunting or fishing and camp at any of the 250+ campsites. There is free primitive camping in designated areas on Kaw WMA (WMA Map here) for anyone holding a valid hunting or fishing license, no reservation needed. About Kaw WMA

Kaw WMA covers 16,254 acres adjoining the upper two thirds of Kaw Lake in eastern Kay County in north central Oklahoma. Located just four and one half miles east of Newkirk, Oklahoma, Kaw WMA is a mixture of upland and bottomland forest, tallgrass prairie, old fields, and cropland. 

Bluestem grasses and post oak- blackjack forests are predominate on upland sites, which are interspersed with sand plum thickets and agricultural fields. Bottom land forests consist of burr oak, hackberry, sycamore, sand plum and other species. The average annual precipitation for the area is 30 inches per year. 

 

FAQs

What licenses are required for this event?

Anyone 18 and older who accesses the WMA must possess a valid hunting license, fishing license, or conservation passport, unless exempt.  

Who can participate in the hunt?

The WMA is open to the public and sign-up is not required to camp or hunt.

For those interested in Saturday’s special open house event, sign-up is required and limited to 50 people.

Who can participate in the clay target shooting?

Anyone participating in the clay target training must be at least 57 inches tall and able to hold a shotgun without assistance.

What is primitive camping? 

There is no running water, electricity or restrooms at any of the designated camping areas.

Is the WMA closed for this event? 

The WMA is open to the public, however, a portion of the shooting range will be closed Saturday morning for the special event.

From Newkirk/US-77 N, travel east on 7th (following the curves and turns into East River Road) for 6.3 miles, turn left on N. Silverdale Lane and the shooting range will be on the left.
